The ground state phases of orbitally degenerate spinel oxides

چکیده

I review the microscopic spin-orbital Hamiltonian and ground state properties of spin one-half spinel oxides with threefold t2g orbital degeneracy. It is shown that for any orbital configuration a ground state of corresponding spin only Hamiltonian is infinitely degenerate in the classical limit. The extensive classical degeneracy is lifted by the quantum nature of the spins, an effect similar to order-out-of-disorder phenomenon by quantum fluctuations. This drives the system to a non-magnetic spin-singlet dimer manifold with a residual degeneracy due to relative orientation of dimers. The magneto-elastic mechanism of lifting the “orientational” degeneracy is also briefly reviewed.

Ultrafast Band Engineering and Transient Spin Currents in Antiferromagnetic Oxides

We report a dynamic structure and band engineering strategy with experimental protocols to induce indirect-to-direct band gap transitions and coherently oscillating pure spin-currents in three-dimensional antiferromagnets (AFM) using selective phononic excitations. In the Mott insulator LaTiO3, we show that a photo-induced nonequilibrium phonon mode amplitude destroys the spin and orbitally deg...

Energy convexity estimates for non-degenerate ground states of nonlinear 1D Schrödinger systems

We study the spectral structure of the complex linearized operator for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger systems, obtaining as byproduct some interesting properties of non-degenerate ground state of the associated elliptic system, such as being isolated and orbitally stable.

A Study of Catalytic Performance of Co3O4 and Cu-Co Nano Metal Oxides in Combustion of Aromatics

Two Cu-Co and Co3O4 oxides were synthesized by the conventional sol-gel auto-combustion and their physical-chemical properties were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TPR and XPS. The XRD results indicated that copper-cobalt oxide appeared in a mixture form of Cu0.15Co2.85O4 spinel and CuO phases, whereas the cobalt oxide exhibited in the pure form of Co3O4 spinel. The FTIR approved the formation...

Breathing pyrochlore lattice realized in A-site ordered spinel oxides LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8.

A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr(4)O(8) and LiInCr(4)O(8). Because of the large size mismatch between Li(+) and Ga(3+)/In(3+) ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr(3+) ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the...

First-principles determination of charge and orbital interactions in Fe3O4

The interactions between charge and orbitally ordered d electrons are important in many transition-metal oxides. We propose an effective energy model for such interactions, parameterized with density-functional theory plus U calculations, so that energy contributions of both electronic and lattice origin can be simultaneously accounted for. The model is applied to the low-temperature phase of m...
